Horns of Hazzat
The Horns of Hazzat was the site of a pivotal battle in Slaver's Bay, where the combined armies of Yunkai, New Ghis, and their sellsword allies crushed the forces of Astapor's self-styled Butcher King, Cleon the Great. The defeat eliminated Astapor as a military threat and left Meereen, under Daenerys Targaryen, exposed to an ever-tightening siege by the slaver coalition.
Background and the Battle
After Daenerys Targaryen refused Cleon's repeated entreaties to join him in a war against Yunkai, the Butcher King marched his army—composed largely of newly trained Unsullied—south to confront the slaver cities. At the Horns of Hazzat, Cleon's forces met the Yunkish host, which had been reinforced by sellsword companies and legions from New Ghis. The battle was a rout. The Yunkai'i and their allies shattered the Astapori army, and Cleon himself was slain. The defeat was so complete that Astapor, already weakened by internal chaos and famine, never recovered as a military power.
Consequences for Meereen
News of the battle reached Meereen through Brown Ben Plumm, captain of the Second Sons, who reported that the Yunkai'i had bought new sellswords and that two legions from New Ghis had fought beside them. The victory emboldened the slaver coalition. Yunkish envoys were sent to Myr and Volantis to hire more blades, and the Wise Masters began to tighten their siege of Meereen. Daenerys, who had hoped to avoid war with Yunkai, found herself facing a coalition that grew stronger with each passing day. The Horns of Hazzat marked the moment when the war in Slaver's Bay turned decisively against the dragon queen, forcing her to seek peace through her marriage to Hizdahr zo Loraq—a peace that ultimately proved fragile and short-lived.
